Brother ink cartridges are very basic in the fact that they dont use any micro-chip or have any form of printhead built in. All of this is performed by the printer itself. Most Brother ink cartridges actually have a transparent window on the back (thin side) of the cartridge. The printer itself detects how much ink is left by 2 small light beams. The printer uses the transparent window to detect how much ink is left in a similar way to us humans looking at our drink level in a cup.
